New Wave Wednesday: "Smalltown Boy", by Bronski Beat

This week's New Wave Fave comes to us from the openly gay British techno-pop trio, Bronski Beat, with lead vocals by the legendary Jimmy Somerville, who went on to a successful stint as lead singer of the Communards and as a solo act.

In 1984, the band took on the issue of gay teens, parental rejection, bullying and running away with the song "Smalltown Boy", featuring Somerville's haunting falsetto.

There is nothing new about homophobia, bullying, victimizing and parental rejection of LGBT kids. But as hard as it is to believe, you can get through it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
