Carl Paladino, the Gift That Keeps On Giving. Anne Coulter Chimes In.

Image by azipaybarah via FlickrAs I reported over the weekend, GOP candidate for governor of New York, Carl Paladino made some outrageously hateful statements about the gays in his speech on Sunday to a group of Othodox Jews. Paladino has been facing a shit storm of criticism since he told the Brooklyn group, "I just think my children, and your children, will be much better off, and much more successful getting married and raising a family. And I don't want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option. It isn't."

Paladino seems to have been left flapping in the breeze by his party. Interestingly, the GOP has not jumped to Paladino's defense. In fact, they are following the lead of GOProud on this one. GOProud Chairman Christopher Barron called Paladino "an embarrassment" on Tuesday, adding, "If he's going to act like a buffoon, he should be treated by the party and the conservative movement as a buffoon."

When word of his homophobic remarks got out, Paladino first he said was was owed an apology, then we came out with a half-hearted apology, possibly because of this little hidden tidbit in his past. Paladino owns a lot of commercial real estate and two of his properties were gay night clubs. The Huffington Post reported on Wednesday:

State liquor license records show that New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino had once collected rent from two gay clubs located in buildings he owned in downtown Buffalo, according to a published report.

The report in the Daily News on Wednesday comes just after Paladino told a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders that he opposed schools for what he called "brainwashing" of students into thinking that being gay is just another choice and "not the way God created us."

Huff Po says that one of the bars, Cobalt, was run by Paladino's son William in 2004 and '05. That might help explain a lot.

It seems that mouthy 'mophobe does have one supporter in the Ann Coulter, fresh off her stint as key note speaker at HOMOCON last month. The icy icon of the neocons claims the gubernatorial hopeful was just playing the game and telling the audience what they wanted to hear. Huff Po reported it this way:

Speaking to Bill O'Reilly on Fox News Monday, Coulter said she felt the need to come to the Republican's defense after it seemed everyone else had stopped backing him.

"I think someone on this network should [defend him]," she said, calling Paladino a "great warrior" who wants to lower taxes.

Asked about the specifics of the speech — in which Paladino warned against letting children be "brainwashed" into thinking homosexuality is an "equally valid or successful option" — Coulter said the candidate was just giving his socially conservative audience the red meat it wanted.

"He's speaking to Hasidim...it's like being in Chicago. You say, 'Go Cubs,'" she said.

These statements say more about Coulter than Paladino. I've long suspected that she's doing an act when she spews her venom. She'll do anything and say anything for a buck and it's worked out very well for her. The more outrageous she is, the more the right-wing nut jobs lap it up.

When Conservatives Eat Their Own

Today's post indicates that there may just be a glimmer of hope for the right wing nut-jobs out there, as three highly visible conservatives show some tacit support for gay rights, or at the very least, are beginning to realize that being a homophobe isn't as lucrative as it used to be.

In the last two weeks, Ann "The Ice Queen" Coulter, Glenn "Cry Baby" Beck and Elisebeth "The F'ing Idiot" Hasselbeck have each indicated their support for varying degrees of gay rights and are catching holy hell from the holy rollers for being traitors in the culture wars.

First up in the holy cross hairs is ultra-conservative author, columnist and frequent talks show guest Ann Coulter, who famously referred to former presidential candidate John Edwards as a fag and to former VP Al Gore as a "total fag".

A couple of weeks ago Coulter, who proves that, like an appendix, you can get by just fine without a soul, agreed to speak at next month's HomoCon convention in New York. The event is sponsored by GOProud, the oxymoronic political action committee of conservative gay Republicans. Coulter's acceptance of the speaking gig cost her in invitation to speak at WorldNet Daily's Talking Back America Conference

This morning conference organizer and evangelical zealot Joseph Farah writes on the WorldNet Daily web site, "Coulter is a political activist, a pundit, a satirist. She is not Jesus. And she is not an evangelist. No one is likely to get saved at Homocon because Ann Coulter gives a conservative stump speech. I'm glad Farah understands that Coulter is not Jesus. It could get very messy at Christmas.

Farah continues his rant, "What will happen as a result of her appearance is that a compromise will be made with sin. Sin will be condoned or appeased. A conservative icon will find accommodation with a sin that would undermine the foundations of Western civilization, the Judeo-Christian ethic and the most basic biblical standards of sexual morality."

For her part, Coulter says, “giving a speech is not an endorsement of every position held by the people I'm speaking to.” She called Farah a "fame whore" and said on the Fox "News" show, Red Eye, “These are fake Christians trying to get publicity.” She oughtta know.

The American Family Association's Bryan Fischer has weighed in on Coulter's move as well as Glenn Beck's recent comments about gay marriage, saying, “Count Ann Coulter and Glenn Beck as the latest deserters in the culture war and in the battle for sexual normalcy.” He adds, “They have flinched at 'precisely that little point which the world and the devil … are attacking, and so have forfeited the right to consider themselves any longer culture warriors.”

Beck told Bill O'Reilly on The O'Reilly Factor recently that he doesn't discuss the "culture wars" on his TV and radio programs. Beck hasn't really endorsed same-sex marriage, so much as he said he doesn't have a problem with it. In essence, he's just washed his hands of it by calling marriage a religious issue, not something the government should be involved with. By embracing the Libertarian philosophy, he can avoid the issue altogether.

The View's token conservatroid, Elisebeth Hasslebeck is also being hassled by the religious right. "Porno Pete" LaBarbera, of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality took exception to Hasselbeck's statement a few days ago that she supports same-sex marriage and that, although she opposes abortion in principle, she supports a woman's right to choose.

LaBarbera wrote to the former reality show star saying, "I know you take a lot of grief on the show for NOT being a liberal (on most issues) — and I respect you for that. But caving on “same-sex marriage” only hurts your credibility as The View’s repesentative, as it were, for millions upon millions of conservative and pro-family Americans who resent the liberal media’s and Hollywood’s secular Left bias. Elizabeth, there are many EX-gay men and FORMER lesbians who have overcome homosexuality in their lives (most by becoming born-again Christians). You should be championing them instead of counterfeit 'gay marriage'!"

Ann Coulter speech cancelled over student protest

In the 1988 movie "The Seventh Sign", Demi Moore plays a women who is about to give birth to the first baby born without a soul, thus bringing about Armageddon. In real life, we know that child as Ann Coulter.

Unfortunately, Hollywood is more merciful than real life. Instead of being put out of our misery by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, we have to endure life with the GOP's favorite ice queen, who can't pass up a chance to make headlines by saying something blatantly racist, homophobic and generally hateful any time there is a gathering of two or more people or a camera present.

Coulter, whose prominent Adam's Apple has prompted some to question her true gender, sees herself as a champion of free speech by thumbing her nose at political correctness. But as anybody with a brain stem can figure out, it's just a desperate, pathetic attempt to stay relevant in a world that as left her behind. Maybe she should do lunch with Madonna for some pointers on how to do that without emitting so much toxic waste.

In Canada, however, they have a more rational approach to venom-spewing hate-mongers. In The Great White North, hate-speech can get you thrown in jail. (OMG, I'm salivating.)

OTTAWA — A protest by hundreds of students led organizers to cancel a Tuesday night speech by American conservative commentator Ann Coulter at the University of Ottawa.

A spokesman for the organizers said Coulter was advised against appearing after about 2,000 "threatening" students crowded the entrance to Marion Hall, posing a security threat.

"It would be physically dangerous for Ann Coulter to proceed with this event," said conservative political activist Ezra Levant inside the hall. "This is an embarrassing day for the University of Ottawa and their student body . . . who chose to silence her through threats and intimidation."

A protest organizer, international studies student Mike Fancie, said he was pleased they were able to stop Coulter from speaking. "What Ann Coulter is practicing is not free speech, it's hate speech," he said. "She's targeted the Jews, she's targeted the Muslims, she's targeted Canadians, homosexuals, women, almost everybody you could imagine."

The announcement of the cancellation was greeted with shouts of "Shame" and "We want Ann" from about 100 people inside the hall. Outside protesters mockingly chanted "Goodbye Ann Coulter." About 10 Ottawa police cars were called to the scene, but there were no incidents.

Coulter expressed her outrage, calling the University of Ottawa a "bush league" institution in an interview for The Washington Times. "This has never happened before," she told the newspaper. "I go to the best schools, Harvard, the Ivy League and those kids are too intellectually proud" to threaten speakers.

Levant blamed the bedlam on university academic vice-president Francois Houle, who had written Coulter to warn her that Canadian laws make provisions for hate speech. "Promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges," he warned her in the letter, which Coulter quickly leaked to the media.
