Duckling Update: Baby Duck is All Grown Up (Video)

Here's the latest video of out 10-week-old duckling, BD (Baby Duck). She's not much of a baby any more and it's getting harder to tell her apart from the grown ups. She's the last one out of the coop in this clip I took this morning and still a little shy with me standing there, so I back away a little bit. Like most adolescents, she's squawking up a storm.

She is finding her place in the flock and as the low duck in the pecking order, she waddles behind the other ducks. She's still very much attached to her momma, but is interacting more with the other ducks.

New Duckling Pic (8-17-10)

Here is the latest pic of our new grandbaby, taken over the weekend. We still don't know the sex of the new arrival that we're calling "BD", for Baby Duck. I tried to get a better pic of mother and child outside, but Momma is very protective and gets between me and the little one every time I get too close, even shooing BD back into the coop when she gets over-annoyed with me.

The baby's leg is healing up nicely. We were afraid we'd have to put it down last week when BD suffered a broken leg in the pond. The vet said it was already healing and suggested we give it time and keep the baby inside the coop to rest for a few weeks. We let them out for about an hour at a time, two or three times a day to join the rest of the ducks. BD is healing quickly and is hardly limping at all now.

We've noticed that some of the bass in the pond have had babies and the mothers have naturally been very protective of them. We figure BD got too close to the fry and one of the momma fish went on the attack. I had no idea  there was so much drama going on here at Morning Wood Acres.

Latest Duckling Pics

Momma Duck decided to take the new baby out for it's first tour of the yard and pond. We still don't know the sex. We can't get close enough to pick it up. For the time being, we're calling it B.D. (baby duck).

Right now Momma is keeping B.D. in the shallows where she can keep an eye on him. We've had snapping turtles in our pond over the years and even lost an adult duck to one last summer.
