WTF, Man!? Pat Robertson Favors Pot Decriminalization

With all the fanfare surrounding the yesterday's historic signing of DADT repeal, you may have missed this little tidbit of news. In yet another sign that we are winning the culture wars, Christianist snake oil salesman/nut-job Pat Robertson has come out in favor of marijuana decriminalization.

The 700 Club founder, who believes he can steer away hurricanes with the power of prayer, said this week on his show that locking up pot smokers is a mistake. He believes that sending them to faith-based treatment facilities is a better solution.

I don't know about you, but religious bullshittery is one of the things that drove me to smoke pot in the first place at the age of 15.

The Christian Coalition founder, who has made demonizing the LGBT community a successful recruiting tactic for his televangelist mega-church and who fleeces little old ladies on a daily basis to build his financial empire, told his gullible sheeple, "We're locking up people that have taken a couple puffs of marijuana and next thing you know they've got 10 years with mandatory sentences. These judges just say, they throw up their hands and say nothing we can do with these mandatory sentences. We've got to take a look at what we're considering crimes and that's one of 'em."

Like most right-wing conservatards, once Pat sees that he could financially gain by changing his position, he has an epiphany straight from heaven. Maybe he'll come out in favor of changing prostitution laws now. So many of our politicians are getting busted for this victimless crime, when what they really need is a little quality time with Baby Jesus.

I'm posting the video here. He goes on a bit about his prison ministry. I guess it helps when you're selling bullshit to have a captive audience. Be warned, if you're trying to not overeat during the Holidays, this may help motive you. If you still have a gag reflex, you may want to have a bucket handy.

Summer Reading: "Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Religious Right", by Rev. Mel White

I'm not one of those who reads a lot of books, mostly because I find most of the stuff that makes it to the best seller lists has been done to death. I've yet to see anything that looks remotely original or thought-provoking. One exception comes from Soulforce founder and author, Rev. Mel Wight, called "Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Religious Right". Every LGBT person who is as appalled as I am at the rise to power and the undue influence of the religious right in this country over the last four decades should read this book.

White, who was an evangelical preacher for many years, was in a unique position as a bible student, pastor, film maker, TV producer and writer to learn the inner workings of the religious right. He was part of the inner circle of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson and even ghostwrote their biographies.

White explains in his book how the Unholy Trio collectively decided to exploit homophobia to build their base, infiltrate and take over the Republican party and the secure the highest seats of power in Washington, including the White House. If you thought the culture wars were just a sign of the times, think again.

The following is from the book's website:
This Fall's midterm elections will see much discussion about the enhanced power of the Christian fundamentalist Right, leaving many people to wonder: just who are these people and what exactly do they want? What are their ultimate goals? The Reverend Mel White, a deeply religious man who sees fundamentalism as "evangelical Christian orthodoxy gone cultic," believes that it is not a stretch to say that the true goal of today's fundamentalists is to break down the wall that separates church and state, superimpose their "moral values" on the U.S. Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic rule, and ultimately create a new "Christian America" in their image. White's new book, Religion Gone Bad, is a wake-up call to all of us to take heed.

Iowa Divorce Rate Drops Since Gay Marriage

Same-sex marriage became legal in Iowa in April 2009, after the Hawkeye State's supreme court ruled that a law defining marriage as between one man and one woman violated Iowa's constitution. So far, The Weather Channel has not forecast any fire and brimstone raining down from the heavens.

The much anticipated destruction of marriage predicted by the likes of Maggie Gallagher, Pat Robertson and their cronies has not only failed to materialize, but the divorce rate has plunged to a 30-year low and the number of marriages in the nation's corn capital has reached a 10-year high. So says an article in the Sioux City Journal:
Preliminary vital records compiled by state officials indicate 21,139 marriages occurred in Iowa last year - the most since 2000 and the first increase since 2005. The 1,573 jump in marriages over 2008 included the first-ever same-gender unions that took place statewide after the Iowa Supreme Court overturned a state law that defined marriage as only between one man and one woman.
Separate data from state health officials for the period from April 27, 2009, through last March 31 indicated that 2,020 same-sex couples - 728 male partners and 1,292 female partners -- were married during that time span while 16,869 opposite-gender marriages were recorded. Records were not available solely for the 2009 calendar year.
Justin Uebelhor of One Iowa, the state's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization, said the landmark Iowa court ruling triggered a spike in same-sex marriages as couples with Iowa ties or partners with no previous Iowa connection took advantage of the newly created legal status to tie the knot. "There are quite a few couples that I've seen getting married this summer - your typical wedding season," he added.

Holy Douche Bag! Pat Robertson call Haitian earthquake "a blessing"

You gotta hand it to Pat Robertson, he never misses an opportunity to put an Old Testament spin on disaster. He blamed 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina on the gays and claims to have to power to move hurricanes away from his Hampton Roads, Va. headquarters and send them up the coast to smite the sinners.

Now this nut-job says that the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti this week, which some news services say may leave half the population dead and the rest homeless, is "a blessing in disguise", calling it a chance for the island nation to start over.

Why would God do this to the poorest country in the western hemisphere? Take a look at this 700 Club clip. Notice how the woman sitting with Pat struggles to look like she's taking him seriously, as he talks about Haiti's "pact with the devil" that freed the island nation, founded by former slaves, from French rule. In the 2nd clip from Wednesday night's "Rachel Maddow Show", the Haitian ambassador responds to Pastor Pat-shit with a history lesson.

Nut-job Pat Robertson says gays want to destroy marriage

Sometimes it can be so embarrassing to live in Virginia. Pat Robertson, the head homophobe from Hampton Roads, who believes he can pray away the gay, not to mention hurricanes, continues to spread lies in the name of Christian love. Isn't there something in the 10 C's about not bearing false witness against thy neighbor? Evolve, already, Pat! Oh yeah, you don't believe in evolution. That explains a lot.
From OnTop:
As Maine prepares to vote on a gay marriage law, Pat Robertson said gay marriage advocates want to “destroy” marriage.

Maine, the first state to approve gay marriage legislatively, is also the first state to put the question up for a vote. Question 1 asks Maine voters to affirm the gay marriage law approved by lawmakers in the spring.

“I don't really believe homosexuals want to get married,” Robertson said on Tuesday's broadcast of the 700 Club. “What they want to do is destroy marriage and some of the other things we have in our society.”

“They don't want any – any – hindrance to their particular lifestyle or their particular way of having sex. That's what it amounts to. Whether or not this is going to be something that will, you know, change the country … the country has voted overwhelmingly in favor of traditional marriage – they don't want homosexual marriage.”

Listing Maine, Massachusetts and Iowa, Robertson said several states have approved gay marriage. “Yet [when] the people have their say, the people say no way,” he added.

This is not the first time Robertson has discussed Maine's ongoing gay marriage debate.

On the day after Maine legalized gay marriage, Robertson called allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry “the beginning in a long downward slide” to legalized child molestation.

“We haven't taken this to its ultimate conclusion,” Robertson told viewers.

“How can we rule that polygamy is illegal when you say that homosexual marriage is legal. … And what about bestiality and ultimately what about child molestation and pedophilia? … You mark my words, this is just the beginning in a long downward slide in relation to all the things that we consider to be abhorrent.”
