Dan Choi Hospitalized After Breakdown

Activist and Iraq War Veteran Lt. Dan Choi has checked himself into a VA hospital after what he describes as a mental and emotional breakdown triggered by last Thursday's crushing senate defeat of DADT repeal. The activist released an open letter explaining what he's been going through and why he felt the need to get some help. (Via Autumn Sandeen at Pam's House Blend):
"I did not initially want to publicize this but I now realize it is critical for our community to know several things: veterans gay or straight carry human burdens, Activists share similar burdens, no activist should be portrayed as super human, and the failures of government and national lobbying carry consequences far beyond the careers and reputations of corporate leaders, elected officials, High powered lobbyists, or political elites. They ruin lives. My breakdown was a result of a cumulative array of stressors but there is no doubt that the composite betrayals felt on Thursday, by elected leaders and gay organizations as well as many who have exploited my name for their marketing purposes have added to the result. I am certain my experience is not an isolated incident within the gay veteran community.

At the same time, those who have been closest to me know that I truly appreciate their gracious help and mentorship. I am indebted to their hospitality and leadership.
If you could share the info and sentiment I'd be most grateful."
Choi says he decided to disclose this latest development himself, rather than have some reporter uncover it, which might make it look as though he had something to hide. That's probably the best thing to do in a case like this. Usually when a public figure seeks help in this manner, they have a publicist handle it with a very short and sweet statement, that explains what's going on, but leaves out the details until the person in question feels well enough to return to public life. Obviously, Dan doesn't have a publicist.

Choi's letter illustrates the psychological toll taken on our queer service members and those activists who fight so hard in the uphill battle for justice.

What I find most interesting about this letter is that it reveals something about Choi that I've always suspected: the guy has an enormous, yet very fragile ego. Comparing himself to a superhero and describing the anti-equality folks and Gay Inc. as though they were super villains shows just how much pressure he has put on himself to carry the full burden of our fight for equal rights.

Having had a breakdown or two in my time, I can tell you that it's your body/mind's way of saying, "Stop! This isn't working!"

A mental and emotional breakdown is like when your computer crashes and you have to reboot. It's actually the healthiest thing your body can do for you when you're headed down the wrong path. I don't mean to say that Choi shouldn't be fighting the good fight. Even with his missteps, like his hunger strike earlier this year, Choi has done more for our movement than most individuals. But with everybody around him constantly telling him what a hero he is, he tried so hard to live up to that image, even though deep down he knew it wasn't true. His subconscious is now trying to help him get back to being "just Dan".

Choi obviously feels as though he's been pulled in too many different directions by too many people and that he's been exploited by organizations and activists who care more about self-promotion than they do about equality. He has become a symbol of our struggle and an idol to many of us. But the fact of the matter is that he's just a guy trying to make a difference. This breakdown is his body's way of reminding him of that.

Good luck, Dan. Get some rest and feel better soon.

British Medical Association says Gay to Straight Conversion Therapies are Harmful

The British Medical Association joined the ranks of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association and a multitude of other groups of medical professionals around the world by declaring at its annual meeting this week that therapies aimed at changing sexual orientation don't work and can be psychologically damaging to those in treatment.

Pink News reports:
The body met in Brighton yesterday and more than two-thirds of doctors present backed a call for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and other mental health standard-setting bodies to reject the treatments and ban their use in codes of practice.

Health departments should also investigate alleged cases of conversion therapy being funded by the NHS, the meeting agreed.

Research published last year found that a sixth of registered British therapist and psychiatrists have attempted to "cure" patients of homosexuality.

Tom Dolphin, the proposer of the motion and the vice-chair of the BMA's junior doctors committee, said: "Sexuality is such a fundamental part of who a person is that attempts to change it just result in significant confusion, depression and even suicide.

"You can’t just wish away same-sex attraction no matter how inconvenient it might be."

But Cardiff consultant neurophysiologist Gareth Payne said there was no "gold standard" evidence that conversion therapy did not work and was harmful.

He added that it was important to respect the wishes of patients who asked for the therapy.

Earlier this year, gay journalist Patrick Strudwick published an expose of 'ex-gay' therapists and began a campaign group to persuade medical bodies to condemn the treatments.

He went undercover for the article, telling two therapists he was struggling to cope with attraction to men and wanted to be straight. One therapist, named only as Linda, tried to convince him he must have been sexually abused as a child by a member of his family.

The other, who PinkNews.co.uk later revealed was homophobic former Northern Ireland MP Iris Robinson's advisor, tried to make Mr Strudwick sexually aroused during his therapy.

Note to our Straight Friends: You're Driving Us Nuts!

A study done by researchers at UCLA's School of Public Health revealed that 48% of gays, lesbians and bisexuals sought mental health care last year as compared to 22% of heterosexuals.

It's not what you might think. These folks are not seeking therapy to change their sexual orientation. The study shows that life is more stressful for queer folks because society in general makes it that way for us.

According to the study, women in general were most like to see a shrink. The group least likely to seek mental health counseling are heterosexual males. Wow! What a shocker.

Let's do the math. In 27 states we can legally be fired and denied housing for being gay.

We have no legal recognition of our relationships in all but a small handful of states and none on the federal level.

In most of the U.S., we can be labeled unfit parents and be denied custody and/or visitation rights to our kids and cannot adopt.

Gay youth are bullied, beaten and ostracized in school, rejected by their friends, families and churches and often end up living in the streets or getting shipped off the ex-gay camps.

Our leaders make promises to us to get elected, then ignore us, or pass more discriminatory laws, once they're in office.

The list could go on and on.

I like straight guys. Some of my best friends over the years have been straight guys. I suspect that I may even have some breeder-boys in my family. It's just really odd to me that the group of people that makes life so much more difficult for the rest of us due to their own insecurities, the group that is the most likely to be homophobic, racist and misogynistic -- you know, the group that runs everything -- is the group that thinks they don't need help.

Since we're all about health care reform these days, it seems to me that the most cost-effective approach to mental health would be to for every hetero male to have mandatory mental health counseling and leave the rest of us the fuck alone!

I'm just sayin'.
