CNN's Larry King's Son Does Spot-On Impression on Farewell Show (Video)

Growing up in a big family, one of the things we enjoyed doing most in our house was impressions. We'd imitate other family members, TV stars, neighbors and anybody else that we thought took themselves a little bit too seriously. It's reassuring to know that other families do the same thing.

Last night Larry King, "The King of Late Night", said farewell to his CNN show, "Larry King Live". There was a star-studded line up of guests, including Bill Maher, Donald Trump and Bill Clinton on hand to pay tribute to King's 25-year reign as the premier interviewer of our time.

At the end of the show King was joined by his latest wife, Shawn (who really knows how many wives there have been) and their two sons, 11-year-old Chance and 10-year-old Cannon, who reflected on what Larry's retirement means to them. It was Cannon who stole the show with his dead-on impression of his octogenarian dad:

Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, Lance Bass and Tim Gunn talk to Larry King about Anti-Gay Violence and Bullying (video)

Image via WikipediaThis was a really great discussion on Larry King Live, despite Larry's sometimes cluelessness. Kathy talks about "Trickle Down Homophobia", where anti-gay sentiments, laws like Don't Ask, Don't Tell, anti-gay voter initiatives, the lack of commitment from our leaders to move forward on LGBT rights and anti-gay religious leaders help to create a sense that it's okay to hate LGBT people. These societal values are passed down through our culture to the younger generation.

October is not just LGBT History Month, but it's also National Bullying Prevention Month. CNN's Anderson Cooper hosts a special presentation this Friday night at 10:00 pm called Bullying: No Escape.

Another Day Without the Juice: Random Ramblings

Well, friends, here we go again. I'm having another one of those days when the creative juices aren't flowing and all the stories in the news are being done to death by everybody. So it's time for another one of my non sequitur, stream of consciousness ramblings.

There's a touch of Fall in the air here at Morning Wood Acres. The first bit of color is in the leaves and the temps have been dipping lower than I usually like. I hate the cold.

We tried having a yard sale over the weekend. Paul made some beautiful floral wreaths and was trying to sell them along with some other stuff from the garage. He made $5 on some old nick-nacks. The few people that did show up were more interested in the things in the yard that weren't for sale.

Larry King used to do this kind of thing for USA Today and got paid lots of money to write crap like "Sometimes there's nothing better than a tuna melt and a glass of Bosco." I can write better shit than that on my worst day. Maybe it's the suspenders.

The cat has been peeing in my bedroom again and I can't figure out why. Maybe she's mad at me.

I once dated someone who was raised in the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church. I used to have fun with him by making statements like, "I don't believe in religion." He'd ask, "How can you not believe in God?" I'd tell him, "That's not what I said. Religion is nothing more than organized superstition and has nothing to do with faith." He'd get this look on his face like a dog watching a football game on TV.

I am confounded on a daily basis at work by people who show up with their laptops wanting a document printed, but have no idea how to get it out of their computer. And they make three or four times what I make.

After trying for the last forty years to lose my New Jersey accent, suddenly New Jersey is hot. Reality shows like Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, Jersey Couture and the Real Housewives of New Jersey are so embarrassing for this former Jersey Boy. They're so friggin' stoopid.

I'd eat more low calorie, fat-free foods if they tasted like pizza or Cheetos.

Ramblings on a Rainy Thursday

Greetings from Morning Wood Acres!

Well boys and girls, nothing Earth shattering to report today. So I figured I'd just start writing and see what comes out. What the hell, Larry King has made a career out of it.

Perennial idiot Elisabeth Hasselbeck of "The View" says in a recent interview that she's actually in favor of same-sex marriage. I feel so much better now that we have her blessing.

The US military is ending its combat mission in Iraq today and troops are finally withdrawing from the country we had no business invading in the first place. Meanwhile dismissals under Don't Ask, Don't Tell are still legal.

The city of New York is still embroiled in the controversy surrounding the proposed building of a Muslim community center near the Ground Zero site. Yeah, let's make things worse. One attack based on religious bigotry deserves another. An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. In the words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?" In my own words, "Apparently not". Jesus must be spinning in his grave over this one.

The Pentagon Working Group is sending out a survey to 150,000 spouses and family members of U.S. service men and women to find out how they feel about DADT repeal. I can just imagine how this one's gonna go:

"If your husband was forced to share shower facilities with a known homosexual while serving in Afghanistan and subsequently left you for said homosexual, would you:

  a. Seek the advice of clergy
  b. Speak with his commending officer.
  c. Request separate housing.

I just had breakfast with my gorgeous niece, Christina, which is why today's post is a little late. Chrissie stopped by the Star City on her way to Nashville to move in with her boyfriend. (Aren't there any eligible bachelors left in northern Virginia?) We met at Starbucks for coffee and breakfast and had a great time catching up. She's a little nervous about making such a big move, but as I told her this morning, do it while you're young. It if doesn't work, there's still plenty of time to start over. Here's wishing her all the happiness in the world. If that S.O.B. does anything to hurt her, he'll have one angry old queen to answer to.

As I wrap up this morning's post, let me leave you with this. Don't let your fear of the unknown keep you from living life to the fullest. You don't have to go skydiving or swimming with sharks to feel like you've lived. Life is extreme enough without jumping off a bridge with a rubber band tied around your ankles. Dare to dream big, and to chase those dreams. Never let someone else dictate the terms by which you live your life. Go for it.

America's Best Fag Hag, comedian Kathy Griffin, went on Larry King last night and talked about the Prop 8 stay, Levi Johnston, "Dr." Laura Schlessinger quitting her radio show and Rod Blagojevich's hung jury.

Laura Bush Supports Same-sex Marriage and Abortion

Former First Lady Laura Bush is once again making her way around the talk show circuit promoting her new book, "Spoken From The Heart". One of the revelations is that she supports same-sex marriage and abortion rights even though her husband used those topics as wedge issues in his 2004 reelection campaign.

According to ABC News, Mrs. Bush told CNN's Larry King, "I understand totally what George thinks and what other people think about marriage being between a man and a woman. And it's a real, you know, reversal really for [them] to accept gay marriage," she said.

When asked if she could accept gay marriage, the first lady told King, "I think we could, yeah." "You think [legalization of same-sex marriage] is coming?" asked King.

"Yeah, that will come, I think," she replied.

Laura Bush called gay marriage the "social issue" of her husband's second campaign in 2004. In February of that year, weeks after a Massachusetts court ruled same-sex couples could marry in that state, her husband endorsed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. 

In her new book the former librarian with bad taste in men writes:

“In 2004 the social question that animated the campaign was gay marriage.  Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

If only she'd had a spine ten years ago.
