Have Yourself A New Wave Little Christmas: "Christmas Wrapping", by The Waitresses

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't know this song was done by The Waitresses. It kind of sounded like Blondie. No wonder I couldn't find it yesterday. So here we go folks, "Christmas Wrapping" from The Waitresses. I couldn't find a video of the band performing this song, but the audio on this one is pretty good and the cheesy light display sets it off in a festive way.

If you're "of a certain age", you'll remember the The Waitresses did the theme song from the short lived 1979 sitcom "Square Pegs", starring the gawky, nerdy, teen-aged Sarah Jessica Parker as a gawky, nerdy teenager trying to fit in with the popular kids. I think it's safe to say she finally made it over the hump.

New Wave Wednesday: "Turning Japanese", by The Vapors (music video)

This weeks' featured video topped the charts in the US, UK and Australia way back in 1980. British band, The Vapors, achieved "One-hit Wonder" status with their hit "Turning Japanese". Ironically, the band knew they had a hit and made the New Wave classic their second release in order to avoid this dubious distinction.

The true meaning of the song about a guy obsessed with taking pictures of his girlfriend has been the subject of speculation for thirty years. At the time, many people thought the title referred to the face a guy makes when he climaxes during masturbation. The band says that's not true. Band member David Fenton says it's about what can happen when you become obsessed with someone you love. He said in a VH1 interview, "Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to."

New Wave Wednesday: "If You Leave", by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (music video)

Today's pic for New Wave Wednesday comes from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, also called OMD.  From the movie Pretty in Pink, "If You Leave".

Via Wikipedia:
The group was founded in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. Adding Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper by the end of 1980, this quartet (with occasional line-up fluctuations) was the core of the outfit until 1989, when Humphreys, Cooper and Holmes all left OMD to found The Listening Pool. McCluskey then retained the OMD name and continued to record and tour as OMD with new line-ups through 1996.

"Telephone", Starring Beyonce and Lady Gaga (music video)

I can't think of  better way to cap off a week of douche bag Virginia politicians getting smacked down by thousands of angry LGBT college students and their supporters rallying on college campuses and marching through the streets of Richmond, than with a new music video featuring the fiercest diva duet since Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer teamed up for "Enough is Enough." three decades ago. (How's that for a run-on sentence?)

The Pairing of Beyonce and Lady Gaga for "Telephone" has been the most talked about and anticipated project since Britney grew her hair back.

This is a surreal combination of Thelma and Louise and 1950's lesbian prison pulp novels, with Beyonce going for an over the top Bettie Page look and Gaga, well, being Gaga. Possibly not suitable for work, due to some small flashes of flesh and Virgin Mobile product placement, but what else would you expect with these two. Enjoy!

New Wave Wednesday: "What I like About You" by The Romantics

Talking in Your Sleep (song)Image via Wikipedia

Founded in 1977, the Romantics were generally considered too pop to be punk, so they got tagged with the New Wave label. The band achieved the greatest success in 1983 with the single, "Talking in Your Sleep".

From 1980, here is "What I like About You", which went on to be featured in major TV ad campaigns. While the song only peeked at 49 on the Billboard charts when it was first released, it has become their most memorable song.

New Wave Wednesday: "Love is the Drug", by Grace Jones (music video)

Before she was a Bond Girl in 1985's "A View to a Kill", before co-starring alongside The Governator in 1984's "Conan the Destroyer", the androgynous, glamazon/force of nature Grace Jones had a successful career as an international super model during the 70's. In the second half of the "me decade", she turned her talents to what would become a hugely successful music career, developing a loyal, international gay following.

My personal favorite is her 1980 cover of the Roxy Music classic, "Love is the Drug", from the album "Warm Leatherette".

What English sounds like to non-English speakers (video)

When I was a kid, my uncle Charlie would entertain us with his version of Italian, which was nothing more than gibberish with an Italian accent. Well, in a case of "turn about is fair play", if you've ever wondered what Americans sound like to people around the world, this is it.
